Germany’s GIZ (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit) plays a crucial role in supporting Ethiopia’s development efforts across various sectors. With a growing focus on the Ethiopian lowlands—covering nearly 60% of the country’s landmass—GIZ works to strengthen drought resilience and environmental rehabilitation in vulnerable regions. More than 18 million agro-pastoralists rely on these areas for their livelihoods, but challenges such as climate change, overgrazing, and deforestation threaten their sustainability.
To combat these issues, the Dry Valley Rehabilitation and Productive Use (DVRPU) approach was developed in partnership with the Ethiopian government. This strategy employs technical, biological, economic, and institutional measures to restore degraded land, increase water retention, and support long-term agricultural productivity. As part of its ongoing commitment, GIZ has launched the third phase of the Capacity Development for Strengthening Drought Resilience (CDSDR) Project, which extends the DVRPU approach beyond Afar and Somali regions into Oromia and the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples’ Region (SNNPR).
To enhance the monitoring and evaluation of its programs, GIZ Ethiopia is now looking for a dedicated intern to support its team in Addis Ababa. This internship presents a valuable opportunity for a recent graduate to gain hands-on experience in data collection, analysis, and program evaluation while contributing to Ethiopia’s climate resilience and sustainable development efforts.
Intern – Monitoring and Evaluation Support
The Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) Intern will assist the GIZ team in tracking, analyzing, and reporting on the progress of the DVRPU approach. The intern will work closely with project staff to improve data collection processes, develop analytical tools, and generate reports that inform decision-making and strategic planning. This role is ideal for a recent graduate looking to apply their academic background in development studies, social sciences, or related fields in a professional setting.
A key aspect of this internship involves enhancing GIZ’s M&E system by utilizing digital tools such as Kobo Toolbox for surveys, MS Excel for dashboards, and Power BI for data visualization. The intern will support the preparation of tracer studies, quarterly M&E workshops, and monitoring briefs, ensuring that project data is accurately documented and easily accessible for program evaluation. Additionally, they will contribute to the preparation of annual reports and assist in organizing and updating federal and regional partner contact lists.
Beyond technical tasks, the intern will play a role in internal communication and event organization, helping distribute key materials and information among project staff. They may also be required to take minutes during meetings and contribute to project-related publications. The ability to speak and write in Afar and Oromo languages is considered an advantage, as the intern may need to frequently travel to Oromia and other lowland regions.
Qualifications and Requirements
Applicants must have a recent university degree (Bachelor’s or Master’s) in Social Studies, Cultural Studies, Development Studies, Rural Development, or a related field. Since this internship is intended for recent graduates, applicants must have completed their studies within the last six months.
Strong data analysis and technical skills are essential for this role. Candidates should have advanced proficiency in MS Excel and Power BI to assist in the development of data dashboards and monitoring tools. Experience with online survey tools such as Kobo Toolbox is also highly desirable. A keen interest in monitoring and evaluation methodologies, data visualization, and impact assessment will be an asset for candidates seeking to excel in this role.
In addition to technical expertise, the ideal intern should demonstrate initiative, problem-solving skills, and adaptability. They should be comfortable working independently while also contributing effectively to a team environment. A solution-oriented approach and strong organizational skills will be critical in managing multiple tasks efficiently.
The ability to work in a multicultural and development-focused environment is key. Candidates with excellent oral and written communication skills in both English and Amharic will be prioritized, while fluency in Afar or Oromo languages will provide an added advantage for fieldwork assignments.
Work Location and Contract Terms
The internship position is based in Addis Ababa, with possible field visits to the Oromia region as part of the monitoring and evaluation process. The internship will be contracted until August 30, 2025, providing the selected candidate with ample time to gain practical experience and contribute meaningfully to the GIZ Ethiopia team.
