Position Overview: Procurement Officer – Import
The Procurement Officer – Import will be responsible for managing the end-to-end import process, ensuring that all imported goods arrive on time, within budget, and in compliance with all relevant regulations. This includes identifying and evaluating potential suppliers, negotiating contracts, preparing import documentation, coordinating with freight forwarders and customs brokers, and resolving any issues that may arise during the import process. The successful candidate will possess a thorough understanding of Ethiopian import laws and procedures, excellent communication and negotiation skills, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team. This role requires a detail-oriented individual who can manage multiple tasks simultaneously and prioritize effectively to meet deadlines.
This role requires a keen understanding of global markets and the ability to identify cost-effective sourcing options. You will be responsible for conducting market research, analyzing pricing trends, and identifying reliable suppliers who can meet our quality and delivery requirements. Furthermore, you will need to build strong relationships with suppliers, negotiate favorable terms and conditions, and ensure that all contracts are legally sound and protect the interests of EthioChicken. A proactive approach to risk management is essential, as you will be responsible for identifying potential disruptions in the supply chain and developing mitigation strategies to minimize their impact. This includes monitoring geopolitical events, economic trends, and environmental factors that could affect the availability or cost of imported goods.
The Procurement Officer – Import will also be responsible for maintaining accurate records of all import transactions, tracking shipments, and resolving any discrepancies or delays. This requires proficiency in using computer software, including MS Office Suite, and the ability to learn new systems quickly. You will be expected to prepare regular reports on import activities, including cost analysis, lead times, and supplier performance. These reports will be used to inform decision-making and identify areas for improvement. In addition to these core responsibilities, the Procurement Officer – Import will be expected to contribute to the development and implementation of procurement policies and procedures, ensuring that they are aligned with best practices and comply with all relevant regulations. Qualifications and Requirements
Applicants must hold a Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain Management, Purchasing & Supplies Management, Logistics, Business Administration, Economics, or a closely related field. A solid academic foundation is crucial for understanding the complexities of the import process and applying best practices in procurement. Furthermore, candidates should have at least one year of proven professional experience in a procurement or import-related role. Direct experience in dealing with Ethiopian customs and commercial banks is highly desirable, as it demonstrates a practical understanding of the local regulatory environment and the specific challenges involved in importing goods into Ethiopia.
In addition to formal education and work experience, candidates must possess a strong understanding of the import process within Ethiopia. This includes familiarity with customs regulations, import documentation requirements, and the procedures for clearing goods through customs. Furthermore, candidates should be highly organized, self-directed, and motivated, with the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and prioritize effectively. Excellent verbal and written communication skills in both English and Amharic are essential, as the role requires frequent communication with suppliers, customs officials, and other stakeholders.
Strong problem-solving skills are also crucial, as the Procurement Officer – Import will be responsible for resolving any issues that may arise during the import process, such as delays, discrepancies in documentation, or customs clearance problems.
