In November 1994, 87 Ethiopian individuals and businesses came together to start Hibret Insurance Company. They began with 8 million Birr paid-up capital and 25 million Birr authorized capital. Their shared goal was to build a trusted and top insurance company in Ethiopia. This team effort marked a new chapter in the country’s insurance industry, encouraging growth, new ideas, and professionalism in non-life insurance services.
By 1997, Hibret made history as Ethiopia’s first private insurer to offer Life insurance. They also launched the innovative With Profits Individual Life Policy. In October 2000, Hibret took a major step by buying Lion Insurance, a smaller and newer company. This move helped Hibret grow larger and set a good example for the industry’s future.
Today, Hibret has many shareholders, totaling 723. The company plans to raise its paid-up capital to 1.5 billion Birr by 2027. By June 2024, the capital reached 1.067 billion Birr, strengthening its place in the insurance sector.
