About the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program
The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at the University of Oxford is an esteemed initiative aimed at empowering African students with leadership potential and a commitment to the continent’s development. This program seeks to provide transformative educational opportunities for talented individuals who come from underrepresented backgrounds, including women, refugees, displaced persons, and individuals with accessibility needs.
Founded on the principles of inclusion and leadership development, the program offers full-cost scholarships to eligible Master’s students. It covers tuition fees, living expenses, and various logistical supports such as an economy return flight, visa fees, Immigration Health Surcharge, and a settling allowance. Scholars also benefit from a unique Leadership and Impact Program designed to cultivate collaborative leadership skills, enabling them to address complex social and environmental issues in Africa and beyond.
Beyond their academic journey, the Mastercard Foundation Scholars are given opportunities to engage in impactful work through the Ubuntu Period of Service. This involves a four to six-month placement with leading African organizations where Scholars collaborate on initiatives that align with their field of study. Upon completion of their studies, Scholars join an extensive alumni network, gaining continued mentorship and access to professional resources, ensuring they remain connected to a thriving community of African leaders.
Full-Cost Scholarship Benefits
The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program provides unparalleled financial and academic support to its recipients. Covering all tuition fees and living costs, the scholarship also includes additional benefits to ensure a seamless experience for international students. These include funding for a return flight, visa application fees, Immigration Health Surcharge, and a settling-in allowance. Moreover, Scholars have access to a dedicated Thrive Fund, which provides emergency financial assistance if needed.
In addition to their Master’s coursework, Scholars participate in a bespoke Leadership and Impact Program. This program equips them with interdisciplinary skills and prepares them to build innovative solutions for some of Africa’s most pressing challenges. Scholars are mentored by leading academics and practitioners, ensuring they have the guidance needed to achieve impactful outcomes.
Upon completing their degree, Scholars undertake the Ubuntu Period of Service, which provides an opportunity to work with prominent African organizations. This practical engagement reinforces the program’s commitment to developing leaders who contribute directly to Africa’s growth and development.
