Associate Human Rights Officer

The Ethiopian Human Rights Commission is seeking an Associate Human Rights Officer to contribute to its mission of monitoring, investigating, and promoting compliance with human rights standards. This role provides an excellent opportunity to engage with critical human rights issues and make a meaningful difference in society.

Qualifications and Experience

Candidates must hold an LLB or LLM degree in Human Rights Law or International Law. For LLM holders, no prior experience is required, while LLB holders must have at least two years of relevant experience or 6–12 months of participation in the Young Leaders Program (Internship Program). Proficiency in Amharic and English is mandatory, with knowledge of additional local languages considered an advantage.

Applicants must also demonstrate computer literacy and a commitment to upholding the EHRC’s anti-harassment and child safeguarding principles. The ideal candidate will possess a strong ethical foundation and a passion for promoting human rights at all levels.

Key Responsibilities

The Associate Human Rights Officer will assist in monitoring institutions to ensure their policies align with international human rights standards. This includes supporting investigations into human rights violations, particularly those related to economic and social rights. The role also involves conducting research, compiling data, and contributing to the development of new policies, guidelines, and laws.

Other responsibilities include drafting human rights reports, following up on EHRC recommendations, and providing statistical analyses and trend reports. The officer will support capacity-building initiatives, awareness campaigns, and stakeholder mapping to ensure effective advocacy for economic and social rights. Additionally, the officer will help maintain contact with technical staff from partner organizations and develop referral systems for individuals affected by human rights violations.


Salary and Benefits

The gross monthly salary for this position ranges from ETB 17,750.00 to ETB 20,567.00, depending on the candidate’s qualifications, experience, and earning history. In addition, the role includes a housing allowance of ETB 8,640.00 and a transport allowance of ETB 3,300.00, offering a competitive compensation package for the selected candidate.

The position is based at the EHRC’s head office in Addis Ababa, providing a dynamic and supportive work environment.
