The Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI) was established in 1970 through the efforts of the Norwegian and Swedish Save the Children organizations, with support from Ethiopia’s Ministry of Health. The institute is named after Gerhard Henrik Armauer Hansen, a Norwegian doctor who first identified the bacteria that cause leprosy, Mycobacterium leprae.
In 2016, the Council of Ministers issued Regulation No. 376/2016, which restructured AHRI. It now functions as a center for biomedical research, clinical trials, and building research skills under Ethiopia’s Federal Ministry of Health. Over the past 50 years, AHRI has become known as a key hub for transferring skills and technology. It has built strong partnerships that focus on research with practical results for improving the health and development of Ethiopia and neighboring regions.
